Some varieties of trees do have peeling bark, but normally you would have seen curls and drops from the last-year's peeling. It sounds more like your Maple is dying, perhaps from Anthracnose (Black Heart Disease) or some sort of older damage - perhaps a strike below the grade with a bulldozer when your house was being built? Those kinds of mortal wounds can take over a decade to show their fatal damage. Insects could be killing it, some work deep in the tree and would not be visible. If the dropping bark is thick and the surface below is raw or mushy-looking (even if it feels hard) it is dying. You could have an Arborist come by though and verufy if anything can be done or how long you have before you need to get it cut down - look in your phonebook. A photo would help. I notice that I gained more energy. But what sucks is, one night I forgot to take the pills & the next morning, I felt like I had a blast! I felt like I had stomach ache, cramps, diarrhea, whatever.
